Red Sox Nation

April 14, 2008 - One Response

The Yankees do suck, that is why Red Sox fan embrace this term. I can go on for hours about why  they suck, but today we’ll start with George and sons. They have destroyed baseball and should be jailed for what he has done to our national pastime. George and his sons have bought players and made it impossible for small market teams to compete. The moment a good player comes up through the ranks of a team like the Marlins or Royals, George sends his cronies in with a bunch of money and say “hey you don’t want to play in Kansas City, come play in New York and we’ll give a bunch of  money.” And before any crazy members of the empire start giving me a hard time about the Red Sox payroll, lets keep in mind that it is just over half of the Yankees payroll. The Red Sox have done things right, create a solid farm system and add parts through free agency, not the entire team.  The Yankees Suck and I’ll cheer that no matter what team the Sox are playing at Fenway. That team has made our life a living hell and the Nation hates them.

As for “Red Sox Nation” this is a fact, in 2007 the Red Sox the highest average road attendence of any team. Go to Camden Yards when the Sox take on the O’s and you’ll see more “B”s than birds on the caps. Its like the Cowboys in football or the Lakers in basketball, the appeal of the Red Sox extends beyond the borders of New England.

Chime in about your thoughts about why the Yankees suck.

Go Sox!

Boston vs. New York Rivalry

April 13, 2008 - One Response

Well, this is my first blog having to deal with the beloved Yankees/Red Sox rivalry.  First of all, let me set the record straight, I am a Mets fan, through and through, so there will be talk of the beloved Metropolitans to come on this blog.

I have been around this storied rivalry my entire life, even more so now that I am the sports producer at Channel 3.  As most of my coworkers can attest, I take pride in the misfortunes of the Red Sox (a shocker there as a Mets fan).

My point for this is clear and simple, Red Sox fans.  I do not get, nor will I ever get, the whole “Red Sox Nation” thing.  Why can’t we just say we are fans?  Do we really have to label ourselves as a nation?

I also never understood why Sox fans continue to say, rather passionately, “Yankees Suck”.  I am not a Yankees fan by any means, but to say that an organization that has been better than it’s competition 26 times sucks, is just foolish.  I mean really.

Oh well, that’s my opening rant.  Feel free to let me know how you feel (regardless of which side of the tracks you stand).

GO METS!

Memo to Joe Girardi

April 13, 2008 - Leave a Response

Dear Joe,
I’d like to welcome you to your new job as the Yankees manager. While yes I’m a bit angry that you helped get me fired, just so you get a new job, I’m here to offer you some advice. First, keep Andy Pettitte away from needles that contain B-12, I think there is something else in there. Second watch out for falling beams when showing your family around the stadium (boy this place is dump). Finally and most important of all when you are playing the Boston Red Sox don’t under any circumstances pitch to Manny. Let me make this clear if you pitch to him with anyone he will hit the ball and score runs. Fans in Boston have an on again off again relationship with him and love it when he beats the Yankees.
Good luck,
Joe Torre

Apparently Girad never got this memo.

Oh and congrats to the Boston College Men’s Hockey team as they brought home another title for Boston, defeating Norte Dame 4 to 1 last night.

The Curse of the Shirt

April 11, 2008 - Leave a Response

There is a story from NY Post about some construction workers burying a Red Sox t-shirt in the concrete of the new Yankees stadium. All I can do as a Red Sox fan is laugh. I love this story and I love that it got out there. Even if it is not true, next year when Yankees fans are sitting in their nice new stadium they will have to sit with knowledge that a Red Sox shirt is in the bedrock of their stadium. I get such joy out of this.

To those construction workers, I say thank you. And to the Red Sox owners I thank you as well, you helped save our ballpark, America’s Most Beloved Ballpark!

Life in our house

April 11, 2008 - Leave a Response

One of my favorite things about living in Connecticut is being right in the middle of the Red Sox/Yankees rivalry. More than anywhere else you feel the rivalry living in the state. Go to any sports bar, restaurant, grocery store or work place you are bound to see both B caps and NY caps on the hats of fans. There are always jabs back and forth.

In my house, we feel the jabs more than most. My longtime roommate Mark (who will also be contributing to this blog) is big New York fan. He hates Boston sports teams. Taking him to Fenway was not a pleasant experience. I was born 6 miles from Fenway and I slept a lot better after 2004. Things can get interesting in our house. The person to feel really bad for in this whole thing is my fiancee, Kim (of course she is loyal Sox fan) but she does not get as angry about things as Mark and I do. Things can get pretty heated in my house, especially come September.

This weekend the rivalry starts again! I don’t know of a Red Sox fan or Yankees fan who doesn’t love these games. These two teams will play 19 times over the season and  every game counts as we saw last season. So Connecticut this weekend find you favorite chair or sports bar and cheer on your team…

And if you hear a loud cheer coming from East Hartford, Big Papi must have hit another game ending homer off Rivera. Go Sox!
